With floods devastating vast swathes of England, the flood on everyone’s mind in Burnley is Brendan Flood and his ambitious £20m plans for the redevelopment of the town’s vintage football club.
The project, which will start next year if planning permission is granted, includes a new £10m stand for the Turf Moor stadium, a hotel and restaurant complex, Business Centre, multi-screen cinema, supporters’ bar and a new retail sports store. Plans also include a state-of-the-art Football Academy at the Championship club’s Gawthorpe training ground.
The stadium regeneration will be funded by director Brendan Flood, a lifelong supporter of the Lancashire club, who made his millions with urban regeneration firm ‘Modus Properties’ and is convinced that the club’s future looks bright.
“One of the attractions of Burnley is that we have a good stadium which can be quite intimidating for away teams. Opposition teams don’t like coming to Turf Moor and we’ve got a lot of established tradition that we can be proud of.”
Club chairman Barry Kilby Kilby cannot wait for the builders to move in and is particularly keen on the new Football Academy.
“We really do need Academy status. That is one thing that we have been lacking in the time that I’ve been chairman.
“I’m pleased about the Gawthorpe development. It’s important because it is part of our drive to reach Academy status and, hopefully, that will be another brick in the wall building us towards the Premiership. Clubs like Burnley need kids coming through. We were once famous for it.”
The news of the redevelopment comes at a busy time for Burnley Football Club in the close season and follows the signings of 4 new players, goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, Bulgarian international winger Besart Berisha, striker Robbie Blake and left back Stephen Jordan. One or two more are still expected to sign for the Clarets before the season starts.
All in all, it looks like being an exciting time for Burnley Football Club.
