Did Britain agree to free a key al Qaeda terrorist for Alan Johnston’s release?

World Net Daily reports that Palestinian sources involved in the negotiations to free Alan Johnston claimed that Britain told Hamas that it would free from jail an extremist sheik, accused of serving as al-Qaida’s spiritual adviser in Europe, in exchange for the release of Alan Johnston.

The sheik, Abu Qatada, is accused among other things of advising 9/11 terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui and attempted shoe-bomber Richard Reid. A British immigration appeals commission report concluded that Qatada was a “key UK figure” in al-Qaida related terror and he is wanted for terrorist offences in Algeria, the U.S., Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Jordan.

The sources claimed that the British government spoke to Hamas through mediators and agreed to release Qatada within a period of six months, presumably so people wouldn’t link his release with the freeing of Alan Johnston.

It can’t be true. The British government would never give in to terrorism and put countless lives at risk by releasing a key al Qaeda terror suspect. Would they?
